Transport Department

The Transport Department is established at Metropolitan Assembly as per Second Schedule of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). The department is responsible for urban transport planning, regulation, licensing and safety management within the Cape Coast Metropolis.

Vision

To develop a safe, efficient and sustainable transportation infrastructure and services to deliver enhanced socio-economic opportunities for the citizenry of Cape Coast Metropolis.

Mission

To deliver transportation management solutions that provide safe, effective, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system through Local Government Service delivery standards consistent with best consumer satisfaction to enhance the quality of life of the people.

Core Functions & Responsibilities

  • Assist the assembly to formulate and implement policies on transport services within the framework of national policies.
  • Prohibit or restrict the driving of general or any specified vehicles on specified roads or specified directions.
  • Regulate the use and conduct of public vehicles, including the routes and parking places in accordance with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority Act (ACT 569).
  • Provide for the identification of licensed vehicles.
  • License taxis, bicycles and motor bikes and prescribe fees to be paid.
  • Develop and maintain an accurate transport database for the Metropolis.
  • Ensure effective, efficient and sustainable transport services delivery.
  • Develop capacity and technical expertise for transport planning and regulation.
