On 6th June 2026, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly’s Waste Management Department and Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit, in collaboration with the CARDET Corps of various second-cycle institutions in Cape Coast, the Environmental Eco Club (Ocean Initiative Hub), and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), organized a metropolitan-wide cleanup exercise to promote environmental sustainability and maintain a clean and healthy city.

The cleanup exercise formed part of Ghana’s 66th Republic Day celebrations and was conducted simultaneously in all regional and district capitals across the country. The nationwide initiative sought to promote civic responsibility, community pride, and active citizen participation in environmental stewardship. Approximately 30,000 cadets participated nationwide, making the exercise one of the largest coordinated sanitation campaigns in recent years.

Despite the heavy downpour experienced in Cape Coast, participants demonstrated remarkable commitment and enthusiasm throughout the exercise. The Waste Management Department and Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit provided technical support, coordination, and supervision to ensure the successful implementation of the cleanup activities.

Participation and attendance were highly encouraging, reflecting a growing sense of environmental responsibility among residents and stakeholders. The exercise not only contributed to improving sanitation within the metropolis but also inspired greater community involvement in environmental conservation efforts.

The event underscored the importance of collective action in maintaining a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. Through the collaboration of government institutions, educational establishments, environmental organizations, and community members, the initiative highlighted the shared responsibility of safeguarding the environment for present and future generations.
